Malta delivered a determined performance to overcome Andorra and secure their first win in the UEFA Nations League. Following a disappointing defeat in Moldova, the pressure was on Michele Marcolini’s squad to claim all three points and reignite their campaign.
Ryan Camenzuli, representing Ħamrun Spartans, emerged as Malta’s hero, netting the decisive goal just before half-time, which secured a crucial victory in League D Group 2. However, the standout performance came from goalkeeper Henry Bonello, also of Ħamrun Spartans, whose three vital one-on-one saves preserved Malta’s lead and ensured the team held on for a hard-fought win.
Marcolini’s relief was palpable after witnessing his team deliver a significantly improved display, showing grit and determination while successfully containing Andorra’s late attempts for an equalizer.
Now, Malta will look to carry this momentum into their next crucial fixture against Moldova on October 13. With promotion hopes still alive, the Maltese team will need a win by at least a two-goal margin to stay in the hunt.
Marcolini made four tactical changes following the Moldova defeat. Teddy Teuma returned to the lineup after being declared fit, replacing Steve Pisani, while Kyrian Nwoko was selected ahead of Paul Mbong. Carlo Zammit Lonardelli took Yannick Yankam’s place, and Luke Montebello earned a starting spot after an impressive second-half appearance against Moldova, replacing Kemar Reid.
As the game commenced, both sides battled for early control, with Andorra leaning on their physicality to unsettle Malta. However, as the first half progressed, Malta began to assert dominance, coming close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions before ultimately securing the win.
