Naxxar Lions earned their first three points in the 360Sports Malta Premier Closing Round as they came from behind to defeat Birkirkara 2-1 at the National Stadium on Saturday.
Birkirkara, known as The Stripes, took the lead early in the match, finding the net after just 14 minutes. A well-placed cross from Leandro Lacunza on the right found an unmarked Maxwell Samurai, who made no mistake in heading the ball home.
However, Naxxar Lions fought back and found the equalizer just two minutes before halftime. Tomislav Papazov unintentionally lobbed the ball over his own goalkeeper, Giacomo Volpe, in an attempt to clear a dangerous cross from the right, resulting in an own goal.
Eleven minutes into the second half, Naxxar completed their comeback. A precise cross from the left found Maicon, who confidently smashed the ball past Volpe, giving Naxxar Lions a 2-1 lead.
Following the match, Naxxar Lions’ coach praised his players, stating that the victory was a result of their determination and resilience to rise to the occasion.
