Wrestling icon John Cena has revealed that he was twice diagnosed with skin cancer as he launched a campaign to promote sun protection. The WWE superstar, known for his incredible career in the ring, opened up about his past health struggles and emphasized the importance of using sun cream.
A Childhood Without Sun Protection
Cena, now 47, shared that while growing up near Newburyport and Salisbury Beach, he rarely used sun protection. Recalling his early memories, he explained how sun care was not a common concern during his childhood.
“My mom raised five boys, and she had her hands full. I certainly do not blame her. Being born in ’77, this was kind of all new knowledge.”
His lack of awareness continued into his twenties when he moved to Florida, further increasing his exposure to harmful UV rays.
Receiving the Diagnosis
Cena’s wake-up call came when he visited a dermatologist for a skin checkup. It was then that a cancerous spot was found on his right pectoral muscle. Fortunately, the spot was successfully removed, but the experience served as a serious warning.
“I was very lucky to have a great dermatologist who guided me through the process. That phone call is not what you want to get—it’s unpredictable, and you don’t know how bad it’s going to be.”
Just a year later, another cancerous spot appeared on his right shoulder, which also required removal. The scar remains visible and can be spotted during his WWE matches.
Advocating for Sun Protection
Now, Cena is using his platform to raise awareness about the importance of skin protection. Comparing skincare to dental hygiene, he urged people to develop healthy habits early:
“If you brush your teeth to avoid pain at the dentist, why not take care of your skin the same way? It’s even easier than brushing your teeth!”
To further his mission, Cena has teamed up with Neutrogena to promote their latest skincare products, emphasizing the need for daily sun protection.
Balancing Health and Wrestling Legacy
While advocating for skin health, Cena is also navigating what may be his final year in wrestling. As he continues his journey in the WWE, he has the chance to win his 17th world championship, solidifying his legendary status.
John Cena’s skin cancer diagnosis serves as a powerful reminder that sun protection is essential. His message is clear: taking care of your skin today can prevent serious health issues in the future. Through his advocacy, he hopes to inspire others to prioritize their skin health and adopt lifelong protective habits.
