Residents and Pets Safely Evacuated Following Electrical Fire
A terrifying ordeal for several Marsaskala residents ended safely on Friday after a sudden fire broke out in the common area of their apartment block, leaving many stranded on their balconies.
The blaze, which originated in and completely engulfed the building’s electrical meters, quickly filled the common areas with smoke and cut off the primary escape routes for those inside.
Urgent Rescue Operation
The Civil Protection Department (CPD) launched an immediate and urgent response to battle the flames and secure the safety of the trapped individuals. Firefighters from stations 1, 4, and 5 were rapidly deployed to the scene.
With stairwells impassable due to the fire and smoke, emergency responders had to execute high-angle rescues directly from the exterior of the building. To reach the stranded residents, the CPD deployed specialized equipment, including:
-
A 32-meter turntable ladder for the highest floors.
-
A 13.5-meter ladder to secure those on lower levels.
The coordinated effort ensured the urgent evacuation of all stranded residents, as well as their family pets, bringing them safely down to street level.
Fire Brought Under Control
Thanks to the rapid intervention of the CPD, the intense electrical fire was successfully battled and brought under control before it could spread further into the individual residential units.
Authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident. The swift actions of the firefighters ensured that what could have been a major tragedy ended with all residents and their pets safe and accounted for.
