The Superintendent of Public Health has informed the public that, as a precautionary measure, swimming at Dawret il-Qalb Imqaddsa in Birżebbuġa is currently not recommended due to an ongoing sewage leak.

In a recently issued statement, authorities explained that the sewage percolation has negatively affected the area’s bathing water quality, presenting a direct health risk to any swimmers who enter the water.

Source of Contamination Identified

Following reports of the leak, Environmental Health Officers launched an investigation and have successfully traced the source of the pollution. The sewage runoff was found to be originating from private residences located on Triq it-Tankijiet, Birżebbuġa.

Legal Action Taken

In an effort to resolve the issue swiftly, authorities have taken the following steps:

  • Issued an official abatement and removal notice.

  • Initiated legal action against the owner of the responsible property.

At this stage, the Environmental Health Directorate has stated that the duration of the contamination cannot be predicted. The public is strongly advised to respect the warning signs in the area and avoid swimming at Dawret il-Qalb Imqaddsa until official clearance is given.
