Radio 105 is proudly celebrating a significant and enduring milestone: 24 years of uninterrupted broadcasting in the Maltese Islands. This anniversary is a testament to the station’s resilience and its deep connection with generations of listeners.
From Radio Galaxy to Radio 105: The Origin Story
The station’s journey began on December 6, 2001. It was initially launched under the name Radio Galaxy 105, marking its debut with a memorable first track: Hero by Enrique Iglesias.
The official launch was a personal triumph for its founder, Manuel Chircop. Chircop, who directed the station and initiated its launch, was assisted by Mark Attar, a broadcaster who would later become a prominent figure in Maltese sports journalism.
Mr. Chircop recalled the long road to realizing his vision: “The dream of one day owning a radio station had been simmering in my mind for a number of years after I presented programs on private radio in the 90s.” The ambition, fueled by his earlier experience in private broadcasting, culminated in 2001 when he secured the necessary licenses from the Broadcasting Authority and the Malta Communications Authority—a critical step in Malta’s pluralistic media landscape established in the 1990s. This achievement placed the station among a new wave of independent broadcasters that followed the nationalization era.
A Deep Emotional and Historical Connection
Reflecting on over two decades in broadcasting, Manuel Chircop expressed the profound joy and nostalgia the anniversary brings. “Today, when I look back on these 24 years, it evokes various emotions of the beautiful episodes that Radio 105 brought me into contact with,” he stated.
Now simply known as Radio 105, the station holds a distinguished place as one of the longest-running and most established radio stations in the Maltese islands, a significant achievement in a competitive local media market.
Embracing the Future with State-of-the-Art Technology
Radio 105 is not content to rely solely on its history. It has fully embraced the digital future. The station has evolved into a comprehensive media entity, forming a network of digital channels that are available to listeners not only through traditional means but also online and via Smart Speakers. This multi-platform approach ensures the station remains accessible and relevant to modern audiences both locally and abroad.
In a clear commitment to excellence and listener service, Radio 105 recently inaugurated new, State-Of-The-Art studios. These facilities are equipped with the latest broadcast technology, designed to enhance production quality and secure the station’s ability to deliver the “best service” to its audience for many years to come.
Happy 24th Anniversary to Radio 105, a true pillar of Maltese broadcasting!
