A grass fire in Żebbuġ quickly escalated into a major industrial blaze on Saturday afternoon, prompting a massive response from multiple firefighting units to bring the situation under control.

The fire initially broke out shortly after 2:00 PM. What began as a relatively small grass fire in a field alongside Mdina Road rapidly intensified. Aided by the conditions, the flames quickly spread to an adjacent scrapyard where numerous end-of-life cars and other discarded materials were being stored.

Within minutes, the blaze engulfed several vehicles and surrounding rubbish, sending a thick, billowing plume of black smoke into the sky that could be seen from several kilometres away.

Emergency Response and Road Closures

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) was immediately dispatched to the site. Multiple firefighting units are currently battling the blaze to prevent further spread and secure the area. The CPD has confirmed that emergency response operations are “ongoing and the situation is being closely monitored.”

Due to the severity of the fire and the massive emergency response required, Mdina Road in Żebbuġ is currently closed to traffic in both directions. Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

The Civil Protection Department has issued an urgent appeal, urging the public to follow all instructions issued by emergency services and local authorities until the area is deemed safe.
