A 26-year-old man has been charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was fatally shot in Midtown Manhattan last week.

Luigi Mangione was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, located approximately 280 miles west of New York City. His arrest came after a vigilant customer at the fast-food restaurant recognized him and alerted authorities.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland family, was reportedly carrying a firearm and a handwritten note described by police as shedding light on his “motivation and mindset.” Just hours after his arrest, New York authorities formally charged him with murder and four additional counts, including firearms violations.

The victim, Brian Thompson, 50, was shot in the back outside the Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning. The shooting occurred as UnitedHealthcare, the health insurance giant he led, was hosting an investors’ meeting at the hotel.

Investigators have stated that the killing was premeditated. Following his arrest, Mangione appeared before a Pennsylvania court, where he was arraigned on five charges and denied bail.
