France’s high-speed rail network, operated by SNCF, was targeted by coordinated sabotage, including arson, just hours before the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics. These “malicious acts” have severely disrupted the system, affecting around 800,000 passengers.
A source close to the investigation confirmed these were deliberate acts of sabotage. SNCF reported that the attacks were aimed at paralyzing the TGV network, with many routes now cancelled. The Atlantic, northern, and eastern lines were heavily disrupted, and repairs are expected to last through the weekend.
Trains are being rerouted, but many cancellations are inevitable. The southeastern line was spared due to a foiled attack. SNCF has advised passengers to postpone their trips and avoid train stations.
Eurostar services between London and Paris are also affected, with cancellations and longer journey times. Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete condemned the attacks and assured that efforts are underway to restore normal service. Paris police chief Laurent Nunez announced increased police presence at overcrowded train stations due to the disruptions.
