Gen Z Protests in Germany Marred by Riots and Looting

What began as peaceful mass demonstrations over the escalating cost of living in Germany descended into violence late Saturday, with rioters looting shops in central Frankfurt and clashes breaking out across several major cities.
Beyond Frankfurt, Germany’s financial heart, violent incidents were reported in Berlin, Cologne, and Hamburg. Police deployed water cannons to disperse crowds after emergency workers were targeted with fireworks, stones, and bottles. In Frankfurt, a large section of the main shopping district was cordoned off by police, and authorities confirmed numerous arrests.
The demonstrations were organized by the campaign group Gen Z regelt (“Gen Z takes charge”). Thousands took to the streets to voice their opposition to the high cost of living, public spending cuts, school underfunding, and compulsory military service.
Lina Friedrich, a spokesperson for the group, stated that the movement aims “to fight for peace and freedom, rather than for war and coercion.” She emphasized a demand for structural changes, adding: “What matters most to us is better support for the health and education systems. We are against compulsory military service and we are in favour of a fairer distribution of the burden.”
The unrest in Germany echoes similar youth-driven demonstrations recently seen in neighboring France, where over 320,000 people protested on the same day. While Gen Z regelt organizers had anticipated higher turnouts on their website, authorities estimated that roughly 18,000 protesters gathered across Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin.
