21-Year-Old Remanded in Custody on Terrorism Charges in Syria

Daniel Spiteri, a 21-year-old residing in Żabbar, has been remanded in custody after being arraigned in court on charges of involvement in terrorist activities abroad. It emerged in court that the accused was employed as a clerk at Mater Dei Hospital. Before Magistrate Marseanne Farrugia, Spiteri was accused of traveling to Syria to participate in terrorism. The charges also include inciting other individuals to commit terrorist acts, as well as receiving training or specifically studying the use of explosive materials and firearms. The Prosecution, led by Inspector Zachary Zammit, explained the background of this case in the courtroom. The Inspector detailed how, last May, the Anti-Terrorism Squad received secret and confidential information that a Maltese citizen had traveled with the intention of participating in terrorist activities in Syria. After hearing these submissions, the Court ordered the young man to remain in custody at the Corradino Correctional Facility while proceedings continue.
