Malta has announced the death of Advocate Francis Zammit Dimech, who recently served as Acting President of the Republic during the President’s overseas engagements.
Dr. Zammit Dimech was 70 years old.
He was involved in journalism for many years, served as President of the University Students’ Council, and began his political involvement with the Nationalist Party early on, including as President of the Nationalist Party Youth Movement in 1985.
For fifteen years, he was part of the Cabinet of Ministers under Prime Ministers Eddie Fenech Adami and Lawrence Gonzi.
In 1990, he became Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Communications, and two years later, Minister for the same areas.
Dr. Zammit Dimech had been in hospital for treatment in recent weeks before his death was announced.
Nationalist Party Leader Bernard Grech described Dr. Zammit Dimech as a gentleman who greatly served the PN and the Maltese people.
He said that Advocate Zammit Dimech was loyal in every position he held, overcame obstacles, resolved disagreements, and remained positive even in difficult situations.
“Francis was always ready to help and advise, but never interfered unless asked,” Dr. Grech added.
The Nationalist Party thanked Advocate Zammit Dimech for his service as minister, parliamentary secretary, Member of the European Parliament, Secretary General of the Party, Chairman of NET Media, and as Acting President.
