Early this morning, the sad news of the passing of Monsignor Victor Grech, former Director of Caritas Malta, was announced. He was 95 years old. Monsignor Grech will forever be remembered as a priest who dedicated his life to serving those in need and pioneering social care initiatives in Malta.

A Legacy of Compassion

In 1984, Monsignor Grech initiated the Caritas projects in Malta, focusing on prevention and rehabilitation programs for individuals struggling with drug addiction. A year later, in 1985, he established the first Therapeutic Community in Malta for substance abuse rehabilitation.

Monsignor Grech’s influence extended beyond the national level. He was a co-founder of Caritas Europa and served on the boards of Caritas Internationalis and Caritas Europa. His vision and dedication played a significant role in shaping Caritas into a leading organization in social care and rehabilitation.

Groundbreaking Initiatives

Monsignor Grech’s work led to the establishment of Malta’s first residential shelters for men and women. He also opened a rehabilitation home for prisoners dealing with drug-related issues, providing a lifeline for many struggling to reintegrate into society.

Born in Bormla in 1929, Monsignor Grech graduated from the University of Malta and was ordained a priest. He served as Vice-Rector and Rector of the Seminary, as well as National Vocations Director. His contributions extended to education, where he was a visiting lecturer in theology and religious studies and supported the establishment of the first community of Maltese priests in Brazil.

Recognition of a Life Well Lived

In 1990, Monsignor Grech was appointed a Canon of the Cathedral Chapter, marking his distinguished service to the Church and society. His tireless work earned him numerous accolades, including being named a Member of the National Order of Merit of Malta in 1993.

In 2012, Monsignor Grech was awarded the European Citizen’s Prize, nominated by Maltese MEPs Louis Grech and Simon Busuttil, recognizing his significant contributions to Maltese and European society. The following year, in 2013, he was made an Officer of the National Order of Merit of Malta, acknowledging his exceptional commitment to social and charitable work, particularly during his leadership of Caritas Malta.
