A 24-year-old man from Mtarfa tragically lost his life in a traffic accident late Monday evening, coinciding with the feast of Saint Paul. The accident occurred at around 9:00 p.m. in the Ħal Kirkop tunnels heading towards Ħal Luqa.

Preliminary reports suggest that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which crossed into the opposite lane leading to the tunnel’s entrance in the direction of Żurrieq. The car collided with the concrete pillars supporting the Airport Road.

Emergency services, including fire engines and medical teams, arrived on the scene at approximately 9:10 p.m. Rescue efforts were immediately launched to extricate the two young men trapped in the wreckage. Sadly, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was rushed to the hospital for observation.

As a result of the accident, the road leading from the tunnel towards Żurrieq was temporarily closed to traffic.

An inquiry into the incident is being led by Magistrate Joe Mifsud to establish the circumstances of this tragic event.

This accident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance while driving.
