An unexpected discovery from Malta’s wartime past brought a residential street in Mqabba to a standstill today. A British-era hand grenade, suspected to date back to World War II, was uncovered within a private residence on Triq il-Paroċċa.
Emergency Response and Evacuations
Upon the discovery of the device, authorities immediately initiated safety protocols. As a strictly precautionary measure, residents living in the immediate vicinity of the property were evacuated from their homes to ensure public safety while the situation is handled.
The scene is currently being managed by a multi-agency response team, including:
-
The Police Force: Officers have cordoned off the area and are managing traffic and pedestrian access.
-
Civil Protection Department (CPD): Members are on-site to provide emergency support.
-
Armed Forces of Malta (AFM): Experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit are leading the operation to safely identify, secure, and remove the explosive.
-
Medical Team: A medical standby unit is also present as part of the standard emergency procedure.
A Relic of History
Malta remains one of the most heavily bombed places in history, and it is not uncommon for unexploded ordnance (UXO) to be discovered during renovations or excavations. Authorities remind the public that if any suspicious or metallic objects are found that resemble vintage ammunition, they should not be touched or moved, and the Police should be contacted immediately.
The operation in Mqabba is ongoing, and the road is expected to remain closed until the EOD unit confirms the area is clear.
