Ħamrun Spartans’ president Joseph Portelli announced his intention to acquire an Italian football club. The bombshell dropped during a massive celebration on St. Joseph High Street, where over 1,500 fans gathered to honor the team’s historic qualification for the UEFA Conference League group stages.

The event, hosted by Radio 105 presenter Manuel Chircop, featured entertainment from DJ Carlo Gerada, Kurt Callejja, and The Versatile Band. Amidst the jubilant atmosphere, Portelli stepped up to the microphone and revealed his ambitious plans: he is in the process of taking over a team in either Serie B or Serie C.

This bold decision signals a new chapter for Maltese football, potentially opening doors and creating unprecedented opportunities for local players on the international stage.

A Dual Commitment

While this new project is monumental, Portelli was quick to quell any concerns among the Ħamrun faithful. He made it clear that he remains fully committed to the Spartans and has no intention of leaving his position as president. Instead, this venture is seen as a way to create new opportunities and build stronger connections between the Maltese and Italian football scenes.

Portelli’s son, Tristen Portelli, will be an integral part of this new initiative, underscoring the family’s deep involvement and dedication to the sport. This ambitious plan is a potential game-changer for Maltese football, promising a future of new opportunities and greater international visibility.
