Joseph Carabott, the Żurrieq jeweller who was left brain damaged following a violent robbery in August 2023, has died. The 67-year-old was brutally assaulted inside his jewellery store, suffering injuries so severe that he never regained consciousness.

Carabott was discovered by his children, lying in a pool of blood with his hands tied. Concerned after he failed to meet his wife for a tennis session, they went searching for him and found him in critical condition. The savage attack left him permanently brain damaged.

“Worse Than Being Dead”

During court proceedings, Carabott’s son described the horror of finding his father in such a brutalized state, saying the condition he was left in was “worse than being dead.”

The robbery shocked the close-knit community of Żurrieq, where Carabott was well-known and respected.

Three Suspects Charged

Three individuals were arrested and charged with the robbery and the vicious assault. One of the suspects, a woman Donna Borg Sciberras, admitted to her role in the crime and received a 28-year prison sentence. In her testimony, she detailed how the jeweller was kicked in the ribs and head after he tried to resist the robbery.

She has since cooperated with authorities, giving evidence against the two remaining accused, who are currently pleading not guilty. The court case continues.

A Life Taken Too Soon

Joseph Carabott was not just a jeweller. He was a husband, a father, and a man whose life was senselessly taken by an act of violent greed. His tragic passing marks the end of a harrowing journey for his family, who have spent months in anguish, hoping for a miracle that never came.
